Baker Mckenzie South Africa

Baker Mckenzie’s Johannesburg office has operated as an independent practice group since July 1, 2017. The team specialises in transfer pricing and dispute resolution. Stephan Spamer, hired in June 2017, heads the tax team of five practitioners and works closely with newly recruited senior executive Okkie Kellerman, who heads the transfer pricing practice. The tax department advises large clients such as Investec and Vodacom, among many others. Nishana Gosai left the firm in August 2018.


International accounting firm BDO’s tax practice merged with Grant Thornton advisory services in 2018, with BDO acquiring a new office building in the process. It also acquired two transfer pricing professionals this year: Marcus Stelloh, director, from Grant Thornton; and, Natasha Padayachee, manager, from KPMG. 

The firm assisted a top 40 JSE listed company with structuring its financial arrangements and guarantee fees following the arm’s-length principle.

The South African law firm is highly recommended for its tax practice and transfer pricing advisory services. The team of eight tax partners, of which three specialise in transfer pricing, has experience and expertise assisting and representing some of the largest energy companies, banks, and more institutions. Emil Brincker, partner and head of tax practice, specialises in transfer pricing.

The TP practice offers fully fledged advisory in all compliance matters, economic analysis, designing and drafting TP policies, value chain analysis, TP documentation, TP dispute resolution and more. Jens Brodbeck, director, specialises in transfer pricing.

The firm was the sole adviser assisting Zoona Transactions International with developing a new TP model and representing the client before the tax authority in a dispute concerning the previous model.

Deloitte South Africa’s tax team has vast experience in transfer pricing planning, compliance, and dispute resolution. The team provides advice to clients in sectors such as consumer goods, financial services, manufacturing, technology, media and telecommunications, and oil and gas. Deloitte South Africa uses a digitalisation and automation initiative for reducing human error and increasing efficiency. Director Billy Joubert leads the transfer pricing practice, and Musa Manyathi, director, joins the TP practice from the international tax team.

Webber Wentzel

Webber Wentzel has a combination of lawyers and tax advisers providing transfer pricing services. The tax team provides assistance on TP compliance and specialises in TP dispute resolution. This includes designing and implementing tax efficient intragroup transaction arrangements, evaluating existing structures and identifying any tax risks, and representing clients during TP audits. Karen Miller, consultant, specialises in transfer pricing and has extensive experience from leading the South African Revenue Service’s TP practice.
